Blood Testing: Should you get tested regularly?

These days a lot of people are getting regular blood tests done. The main reason is out of a fear of AIDS. The hope is that they can protect themselves by having blood tests done regularly. In general this is a good idea for anybody who is sexually active and not in a monogamous relationship. However it will by no means guarantee that you are protected from sexually transmitted diseases.

Whether or not you should get a blood test on a regular basis is going to depend on your personal situation. The main reason that you would get regular blood tests is to check for sexually transmitted diseases. Obviously whether you need to be tested or not is going to depend in large part on your risk factors for getting a sexually transmitted disease. If you are not sexually active then there is clearly no need to get regular blood tests. If you are in a monogamous relationship then you may want to get tested at the beginning to make sure that you don't have a disease that you can infect your partner with but regular tests are probably not necessary. If you are active sexually with a number of different partners then you are probably going to want to get tested on a regular basis.

If you do have a life style that puts you at risk for a sexually transmitted disease you will want to get blood tests on a regular basis for a couple of reasons. The first is for your own health, like most diseases sexually transmitted ones are easier to deal with if you catch them early. Getting regular tests will help to make sure that you catch it early so that you can begin treatment right away. This will make it easier to cure or at least to limit the damage if it is incurable. The other reason that you are going to want to have blood tests done on a regular basis is so that you can make sure that you don't infect anybody else. The more frequently you get tested the less the chance that you will unknowingly pass the disease onto one of your partners.

There are a number of other diseases that can be diagnosed with blood testing but in general you won't need to get tested regularly unless your doctor thinks it is necessary. Some illnesses will require you to have regular blood tests but your doctor will let you know if you have one of these. Other than that you should be having regular checkups with your doctor, during which he will likely take a blood test. And of course if you think that there is a problem you should see your doctor immediately, where again he will probably take a blood test. However it is usually not necessary to have regular blood tests done in order to check for diseases beyond the sexually transmitted ones.
